Despite the chilly temps in Chicago this spring, I still love enjoying a smoothie bowl in the morning. It’s the perfect way to start my day with a full serving of fruit, vegetables, protein and other superfoods!
When I know I am going to have a busy day of showings and let's be honest, in this crazy spring market every day is a busy day, I need something that is going to keep me full for hours. I have a pretty simple yet super satisfying recipe that is tried and true. The best part, it keeps me energized and full for hours.
INGREDIENTS
1 c. frozen fruit
½ c. liquid
protein powder
superfood toppings
You can change up any of these ingredients so you can have constant variety. Here are a few pro tips:
Vegetables: throw in a handful of spinach or kale! I promise you won’t taste it. Another option is frozen cauliflower. It makes your smoothie so so creamy!
When your fresh fruit is getting too ripe, throw it in freezer bags and save for smoothies! This works great for bruised bananas, just remember to peel first.
Did you know, you eat first with your eyes, so presentation is key! I love a classic white bowl that makes the colorful smoothie really pop! These bowls are deep in case you make your smoothie a little too large, it's ok, it happens. I also love these bowls, a great find at Nordstrom.
When it comes to choosing blenders, there are so many options! I love the way a SMEG blender looks on your countertop if you plan to leave it out. The Ninja is also a tried and true favorite in my household. If you’re looking for more of an investment piece, I would highly recommend the Vitamix. You can use it for more than just smoothies and I love making soups in it!
Below is a classic version of my favorite acai bowl:
½ c. mixed berries
1 acai packet
1 banana (½ in blender, ½ topping)
½ c. almond milk
1 scoop protein powder
Optional Toppings:
fresh fruit, chia seeds, flax seed, hemp hearts, almond butter, chopped dates, coconut flakes, granola…the options are endless! Trader Joe's is one of my favorite places to pick up supplies. They truly have anything and everything you may need including açaí packets. If you are feeling totally lazy you can always pick up these kits.
Instructions:
Add frozen berries, açaí packet, ½ banana, almond milk and protein powder to blender. Blend until smooth. As smoothie bowls tend to have a thicker consistency than smoothies, you may have to scrape the sides of the blender a few times. Pour into a bowl and top with your favorite toppings! Use whatever toppings you have on hand.
Please let me know your favorite combos and toppings in the comments below!
XO, Dana
